FBS

A test that measures blood sugar levels. Elevated levels are associated with diabetes and insulin resistance, in which the body is unable to properly treat sugar (such as obesity), says Dr. Denis.

The target values:

Less than 100 mg/dL = normal.

Between 110-125 mg/dL = weakened fast glucose (i.e. prediabetes).

More than 126 mg/dL on two or more samples = diabetes

Preparation

This test requires a 12-hour speed. You should wait for food and/or take a hypoglycemic (insulin or oral medication) until the test is done, unless otherwise specified, says Dr Slinkin.

Denis Slinkin

When you eat and digest food called carbohydrates, glucose (blood sugar) is produced. Glucose is necessary for your body to have energy for normal activities. Insulin is essential to your body so that glucose can enter cells and be used as energy. Without insulin, blood glucose levels FBS will rise. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when either the pancreas (an organ in your body) is unable to produce insulin, or the pancreas produces insulin but does not work as it should. Packaging blood sugar is part of the diabetic assessment and treatment. FBS over 126 mg/dL in several cases usually indicates diabetes.
